    What is a carbon source in fermentation?

    A carbon source is the substrate microorganisms break down for energy and to build new cell mass and product. It typically makes up the largest fraction of a fermentation medium by weight, and it's the input most sensitive to purity, consistency, and price volatility. Getting the carbon source right affects growth rate, yield, and downstream purification.

    Compare the main carbon sources

    Glycerol

    A byproduct of biodiesel and oleochemical production, glycerol has become one of the most attractive carbon sources for industrial fermentation.

    Crude (60–80% purity) is more cost-efficient; refined (99%+) is the safer default for sensitive strains and regulated products.

    Glycerol tends to win on cost-per-carbon-unit when biodiesel byproduct supply is strong, and on yield for products that benefit from a more reduced substrate. Glucose remains the safer default when your process is already validated on it, or when your organism simply grows faster on sugars.
